Kiitos!

The Luukki work camp is over and we want to thank you for the wonderful days we had together and all the hard work you did here in Espoo.

The camp was a great experience for us leaders as well. We got to know wonderful personalities and learnt so much about your countries and cultures.

Unfortunately the Finnish summer was not at its best, when it comes to weather. Yet, you never complained about working under the rain or spending 6 hours on a windy boat trip J You are the best!

Kiitos, tack, merci, ευχαριστώ, gracias, gràcies, grazie, aitäh, спасибо, dakujem!

Day 11

Hello!

This morning, the camp leaders had a surprise for us: they took us to an adventure park Huippu to go climbing in the forest. After a little training, we went on the different tracks (4 levels). Most of us managed to do the hardest one, the black one, and some fought their heights phobia. Everybody really enjoyed this morning, and the weather was wonderful.

We ate the lunch at a restaurant and then came back to the camp. We took the canoes and went for a nap on the lake.

In the evening, there was an "international moment". Everybody presented their own country: food, dances, music, postcards... We have never eaten so much! We all danced the "Macarena" with Marc and Angel, we ate Speculoos with Louise, Laura and Fanny, and of course, some (very strange) Finnish food (mämmi) prepared by our leaders. Then, we had our last sauna of the work camp. We jumped at least 3 times in the lake! We were up later than usual as it was the last evening together.

Tomorrow is the last morning. After cleaning the whole camp, the camp leaders will take us to Espoo station... It was really a great experience for each of us, and we will maybe meet later in our life!!!
Thank you for reading this blog, it was a pleasure to share our experience with you :)

Day 10

Today we woke up very sleepy, had brief breakfast and went for working in Lainaamo to Suomenoja. We did some inventories and served some costumers. The work was interesting, because something we saw the first time like army tends, snowshoes, backpacks and trangias. After 3 hours we went for the lunch to Puolarmetsä Hospital, where we sat near the nurses and doctors. Some of us tried first time the drink homemade beer (non alcoholic ), for some people it was strange, but in total we loved it. Then we went back to work for some hours and arrived back to Luukki camp. All were so tired that almost everyone went for a sleep. Manon and Louise were cooking amazing dinner for us in French style - potatoes in sauce and a salat. It was surprising, when they also brought on the tables a dessert - a pie with apricots. All was tasty and good serviced. After dinner with full energy we went to our favorite sauna.

Such a great day! See you soon!

Day 9

Tervetuloa!

Today, we finished the work on our camp. Some of us painted, others mowed the lawn, threw seed, etc. At the lunch time, we ate a delicious paella cooked by Angel. After finishing the work, we had a workout session all together organized by our animators. We did a little warm-up and then push-ups, running, sit-ups... We also tried boxing with our master in kickboxing animator, Rita.

For dinner, we ate tacos prepared by our Mexican boy, Luis. It was spicy! 4 of us (Nikita, Luis, Angel and Jacopo) even had a challenge and tried to eat a whole chili pepper as quick as possible. It was really fun, their faces made everybody laugh. Luis, used to it in his country, won the game.

In the evening, after the traditional sauna, we gathered around a fire with a guitar and some pancakes. What a nice evening!

See you tomorrow!

Day 8

Tired of our trip to Porvoo and of our work during the week, we slept until lunch time! Some of us decided to play Mölkky under the rain. Then, we took the canoes and navigated on the lake. We were all having a very very very good time until two of us (the team Laura and Luis) fell into the cold lake. Our rescue training was useful to take them on our boats and above all… to rescue the canoe that was drowning. After a hot shower and hot drinks, we decided to go back to the lake. This time, everybody stayed dry!

Tonight after the usual sauna, we will have a movie night all together.

Tomorrow, let´s go back to work!

Day 7

Saturday was our first day off. Therefore, we decided to go to Porvoo, a beautiful old city 4 hours away from Helsinki by boat. Even though it was our day off, we were brave and got up early, took a train to Helsinki and the boat to Porvoo. The weather was quite cold and windy in the morning, but it got better during the day.

We discovered Porvoo and its old wooden houses. The trip was really interesting as we were not used to seeing such houses, in Finland as well as in our country. Unfortunately, we stayed there for only one hour and a half, but it was enough to have a good idea of the spirit of the city.

During the way back to Helsinki, the weather was warmer, so we could stay outside on the boat. We saw wonderful landscapes, and were lucky to have the lunch on board.

After a quick sauna, we went to sleep. It was a great day!

See you tomorrow!

Day 6

Today has been the last working day of the week. We went to ‘’Snake Island’’ for cleaning up.

We got up early and went to the Espoo harbour, where we took two boats to reach this little island. The boys had to cut apart some old wooden blocks, and carry them to the shore, and the rest of the group had to clean up the area. For lunch we had some grilled Makkara: very tasty! Apart from the mosquitos and the rain, it has been a good experience.

As soon as we got home we took a long siesta, and after the daily sauna we went to sleep, getting ready for the next day.

Goodnight :)

Day 5

Today we’ve learnt a lot of things about Finnish culture.

In the morning we got up at 8 and after breakfast we started working in Luukki. We did things such as painting, carrying sand and blocking wood.

For lunch we enjoyed a local soup with Salmon and vegetables (Lohikeitto), while listening to some good Finnish music.

After lunch we finished our working tasks and we played a popular Finnish game, called Mölkky. The winner was Angel (from team 1 ;) ). He won some candies (salmiakki).

We did also a quiz game about Finland, and the team called LOS CHINGONES BLETT won without any mistakes.

After a little siesta we had dinner, and, of course, sauna with vihta, a typical way of ‘’cleaning’’ yourself with some wet branches. It was very good and relaxing as well.

HASTA MAÑANA

P.S.:Don't worry about that video, we were just following the Finnish traditions. Nothing more.

Day 4

Today´s been the most sportive day. We got up at 7.30 a.m. and we arrived at Oittaa beach at 9.00 a.m. In the morning, we made a rescue training in the beach, where the lifeguard of the beach taught us the techniques about their job. The water was really cold, but it was fine. At afternoon, we cleaned the beach and the frisbeegolf´s fields. After the day of working, the volunteers who wanted went to climb in a Helsinki sportive center. It was great! In fact, for the most of us has been the first time and we´re already looking forward for the next time to come. The dinner´s been cooked by Elina and Nikita, who prepared typical Russian food. At the end, sauna closed the sportive day! See you tomorrow!!

Day 3

Today alarm clock rang too early: 6 a.m. After a good breakfast, we went to Oittaa beach, 15 minutes away from the camp. Cutting the grass, picking the trash were on the program. We came back to the camp at twelve for lunch and we ate really good “croque-monsieur” made by Laura and Fanny. Then we returned to the beach to continue the work, under the rain. For dinner, we discovered a Belgian meal: “Boulettes Liegeoise” and we had the chance to taste Belgian chocolate. Tonight, after sauna and a little jump into the lake we will watch a movie together: “The Experiment”.

Day 2

Hello again!

Today, we started to work on the camp: cleaning, mowing of the lawn, etc. Two groups went to the supermarket to get their food for the meal they wish to prepare. It was quite funny because they couldn´t read the name of the products and always had to call the camp chiefs to translate. Tonight will be an Italian meal.

Day 1 in Luukki

Tervetuloa / Bonjour / Hello !

After meeting at Espoo central station, we arrived on the camp. We were pleased to see that there were a lake and sport materials, and that the weather was quite warm and sunny. We ate pizzas made by ourselves and then had the chance to go to the sauna. However, it was too hot for some people and they quickly ran away after about 10 minutes. Some of us dared to jump into the lake just after the sauna, they were called crazy!
